ZHANG Jianfeng as YAN Zhenqing
ZHANG Jianfeng is a winner of the Plum Blossom Prize, a first-class actor at the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing and a famous young Peking Opera artist who specialises in playing an old gentleman. He is a council member of the China Theatre Association and Beijing Theatre Association, one of the “Four Kinds of Talents in the First Batch” of Beijing, a national young talent by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, a student in the Fifth Graduate Class for Outstanding Young Peking Opera Artists, one of the Third “Peking Opera Stars” of China, and a leading figure in China’s opera circles (as a male role player) in the new era. He studied under renowned masters such as LI Baozhang, ZHANG Rongpei, CHEN Zhiqing, WANG Shixu, DU Yuantian, ZHU Bingqian, YANG Ruzhen, HUANG Shixiang and LI Guang. In 2000, he became a disciple of Mr. OUYANG Zhongshi, a well-known scholar and dramatist. ZHANG Jianfeng is good at performing in such traditional operas as YANG Yanhui Visits His Mother, The Red-maned Steed, Baidicheng, MA Su’s Loss of Jieting·The Empty Fort Strategy·Executing MA SU for His Misconduct, Battle of Taiping Town and FAN Jin Passes the Provincial Examination. He has starred in new Peking operas such as Les Misérables, Red Sand River, Xialu Town, ZHENG Kaofu, QU Yuan, Langya Mountain, GUO Yonghuai, LI Dazhao, Surfing on Tide and QI Baishi, and modern Peking operas including The Red Detachment of Women, The Legend of the Red Lantern, Shajiabang, etc. ZHANG Jianfeng won the Gold Award in the Fifth CCTV Peking Opera Competition for Young Artists and the “Outstanding Actor Award” at the 12th China Theatre Festival.
MA Botong as YAN Zhenqing
MA Botong is an outstanding young actor at the MEI Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. As a member of the TAN School, he specialises in playing an old gentleman. MA Botong is a graduate of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. He studied under renowned masters such as LI Xingeng, CHEN Guoqing, CHEN Zengkun, LI Wencai and DU Peng. In 2015, he became a disciple of CHEN Zhiqing, a renowned Peking Opera artist. That same year, he took TAN Xiaozeng, a famous Peking Opera artist, as his teacher. MA Botong is adept at performing in General YANG, YANG Yanhui Visits His Mother, The Red-maned Steed, WU Zixu, The Ghost Basin, Catching and Releasing CAO Cao, etc. In 2017, he was singled out as a “young leading figure”. He also won the Rising Star Award and the Grand Award in the Second (Beijing) Challenge Invitational for Young Peking Opera Artists in 2013.
QIU Shi as YAN Zhenqing
QIU Shi is a CPC member, an old male role player at the First Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing, specialising in YU and MA styles. He used to study at the Middle School Affiliated to the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and later at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. He attended the Seventh Graduate Class for Outstanding Young Peking Opera Artists. He is also an artist funded by the China Peking Opera Art Foundation’s “Star of Hope” Support Programme. QIU Shi once studied under WU Zedong, ZHU Bingqian, LI Jian, YE Peng, CHEN Zhiqing, ZHANG Jianguo, NI Maocai, CHEN Guoqing, CHEN Zengkun, LI Wencai, JIA Jinsong, DU Peng, GAO Tong, DU Zhenjie, LI Jun, YU Kuizhi, GUAN Zhenshan, YANG Ruzhen, LI Zhengping, ZHAO Shipu and other renowned artists.
In QIU Shi’s repertoire are traditional operas including YANG Yanhui Visits His Mother, WU Zixu, Pillars of the Dynasty·A Visit to the Imperial Mausoleum·The Royal Courtiers, The Red-maned Steed, Zhulian Village, Dragon and Phoenix, The Meeting of Heroes·Summoning the East Wind, The Chinese Orphan, At The White Boa Stage, The Spring and Autumn Record, Stepmother Admonishes the Son, Beating the Nephew to Sweep the Tombs, LI Ling Tombstone, A Register of Clean Officials, Duanmijian River, Empress He Reviles at the Court, The Execution of the General’s Son, Lotus Lamp, QIN Xianglian, The Unofficial Biography of Taizhen, The Pearl Shirt, Qingshi Mountain, The Ghost Basin, Slash the Imperial Robe, etc. In recent years, he has produced operas including Langya Mountain, The Daughter of the Party, LI Dazhao, Madam City, YING Si and SHANG Yang, Headmaster TIAN Han and The Hexagonal Bottle, as well as experimental Peking opera Rosa Rubus in Bloom, etc.
In 2010, QIU Shi won the Gold Award in the First “CCTV Peking Opera Competition for Students from Traditional Chinese Opera Schools. In 2023, he won the Best Performance Award for Old Male Role Player in the First CMG “Conference for Young Peking Opera Artists”.
DOU Xiaoxuan as WANG Qian’er
DOU Xiaoxuan, a member of the MEI School, is a first-class actress at the MEI Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. She is a graduate of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. She attended the Sixth Graduate Class for Outstanding Young Peking Opera Artists and the First Workshop for Peking Opera Genres. She was a member of the 12th Committee of the Beijing Youth Federation. DOU Xiaoxuan used to study under renowned artists including LI Huifang, WANG Zhiyi, LIU Xiurong, LI Weikang, WANG Yuzhen, ZHANG Xunpeng, YAN Guixiang, CAI Yinglian and MENG Xianrong. In 2007, she became a disciple of DU Jinfang, an eminent Peking Opera artist. DOU Xiaoxuan is clever at interpreting The Family Legend, The Red-maned Steed, XIE Yaohuan, YANG Yanhui Visits His Mother, Love Under the Willow, The Legend of the White Snake, The Azalea Mountain, Dragon and Phoenix, Young Phoenix Soar Up Into the Sky, SHE Saihua, etc. She won the Grand Award in the First (Beijing) Challenge Invitational for Young Peking Opera Artists in 2011, the Gold Award for Best Principal Female Role Player in the Seventh CCTV Peking Opera Competition for Young Artists, the 26th MagnoliaShanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Award for Best Actress, and the Golden Star Award at the Second Taizhou “MEI Lanfang Art Festival”. In 2023, she was awarded a certificate of honour at the “Artistic Elites” National Arts Exhibition and Festival for Outstanding Young Artists by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and China Theatre Association.
WANG Qian as WANG Qian’er
WANG Qian is a young female role player at the First Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing, holding an academic degree from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. She studied under WANG Rongrong, WU Jimin, DING Shi’e, FAN Yajing, SHEN Shihua, ZHANG Yuwen, HAN Dongqing, WANG Jin, YUE Penghui and other famous artists. In 2013, WANG Qian became a disciple of WANG Rongrong, a renowned Peking Opera artist. She is good at performing in The Riverview Pavilion, The Story of SU San, The Pearl Shirt, Pillars of the Dynasty·A Visit to the Imperial Mausoleum·The Royal Courtiers, Romantic Dream in Garden, Princess Baihua Presents Her Sword as a Gift, Chunxiang Disrupts the Classroom, etc.
ZHANG Zixi as WANG Qian’er
ZHANG Zixi, a member of the CHENG School, is a young female role player at the First Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing, holding an academic degree from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. She was taught by LI Wenmin, a CHENG-style educator, and other well-known artists. She excels at acting in The Unicorn Purse, YANG Yanhui Visits His Mother, The Legend of the White Snake, The Injustice to DOU E, Empress He Reviles at the Court, The Red-maned Steed, Baidicheng, Stepmother Admonishes the Son, Reunion in the Dream, Dragon and Phoenix, etc. In 2017, ZHANG Zixi was identified as a “young leading figure” by the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. She won the Gold Award in the First CCTV Peking Opera Competition for Students in 2010 and the Newcomer Award at the 23rd Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Award.
ZHAI Mo as Mrs. WEI
ZHAI Mo is a first-class actress and old female role player at the First Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. She attended the Third Graduate Class for Outstanding Young Peking Opera Artists. She is a member of the China Theatre Association, a deputy to the 14th Beijing Municipal People’s Congress, a deputy to the 12th Beijing Municipal Party Congress, and a disciple of ZHAO Baoxiu, a distinguished Peking Opera artist. CUI Ran is an old female role player at the First Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing, holding a degree from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. She studied under grandmasters such as ZHAO Baoxiu, LI Mingyan, LIU Lili, ZHENG Ziru, LI Liping and ZHAI Mo. In 2016, she became a disciple of ZHAO Baoxiu, a renowned Peking Opera artist. She is adept at many operas including Chisang Town, An Encounter with the Empress, Beating the Imperial Robe, LI Kui Visits His Mother, Bazhen Decoction, Giving up the Banquet, Silver Spear, The Legend of the Red Lantern, etc.
WANG Zhongnyu as Mrs. WEI
WANG Zhongnyu is an old female role player at the First Troupe of the Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing, holding a degree from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. She was taught by famous artists including LI Mingyan, ZHAO Baoxiu, ZHANG Jing’ai, LI Liping, ZHAI Mo and ZHANG Dahuan. In 2016, she became a disciple of ZHAO Baoxiu, a renowned Peking Opera artist. In her repertoire are Chisang Town, An Encounter with the Empress and Beating the Imperial Robe, LI Kui Visits His Mother, Bazhen Decoction, The Female Generals of the YANG Family and other operas. WANG Zhongnü won the “Excellence Award” in the Beijing Traditional Opera Red Plum Grand Prix in 2009.
