Set in the Qinghai-Tibet Highway construction, the dance drama tells a legendary story about three members of a family serving as highway maintenance workers to guard the lifeline in the tide of the times. In the 1980s, LU Xun, a young man living by the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, longs to be recognised by his father, LU Buping; but due to the reality of the situation, he altercates with his father and then leaves home to pursue his dream of being a journalist. His younger sister, LU Qing, chose to forgo university, following their father’s footsteps as a road maintenance worker, silently guarding the Qinghai-Tibet Highway.
A few years later, having undergone all kinds of setbacks, LU Xun becomes a trainee journalist. While on assignment, he unexpectedly returned to his hometown located at the foot of Mt. Kunlun , reuniting with LU Qing. Through her words, he learned of their father’s past - In 1954, their father LU Buping had helped build the Qinghai-Tibet Highway in Golmud under the leadership of General MU Shengzhong. After the completion of the construction, LU Buping, bearing in mind General MU Shengzhong’s great trust in him, resolutely chose to stay at the foot of Mt. Kunlun to guard the highway. But when Lu Xun learned his father had died in a rescue mission, he was overcome with remorse, and awakened to the weight of his own duty.
During the reunion, LU Xun witnesses the unspoken faith upheld by his sister and many other maintenance workers, as well as their devotion to the highway. Eventually, he decides to record the story of these ordinary heroes so that the “Two Ways” spirit should be passed down. At the foot of Mt. Kunlun, LU Xun, LU Qing and many other workers jointly draw up their unshakable faith. What they do is an expression of the “Two Ways” spirit, a belief popular in our time. That’s a patriotic feeling or firm faith transcending bloodlines and deeply rooted in the heart.
