About

An ordinary woman FENG Suzhen risks her life to save her husband. After going through all the twists and turns, she attains her wish. A story about a happy marriage is told in Emperor's Female Son-in-law. The image of a kind-hearted, brave and clever girl in ancient period is highlighted through a series of strange but reasonable drama plots, such as being disguised as a man to take the imperial examination, unexpectedly becoming Number One Scholar and mistakenly being chosen as the emperor’s son-in-law and using an artful scheme to solve a dilemma in the bridal chamber.

The original script Shuang Jiu Ju (Rescue Twice) was collected by ZUO Shihe, then discovered by WANG Zhaoqian in 1958. Emperor's Female Son-in-law was created and premiered by Huangmei Drama Troupe of Anqing Prefectural Commissioner’s Office (the predecessor of Zaifen Huangmei Art Theatre). MA Cailou played the role of FENG Suzhen. WU Xiulan and TIAN Yulian sang Princess. WANG Luming and DING Zichen played the role of LIU Wenju. In 1959, this drama was selected and performed in Hefei, capital of Anhui province, which caused a sensation. Later, the film Emperor's Female Son-in-law was jointly shot by Shanghai Haiyan Film Studio and Anhui Film Studio, co-starred by YAN Fengying and WANG Shaofang with LIU Qiong as the director. This film has not only become a companion piece for Huangmei Opera The Marriage of a Fairy Princess, but also paid tribute to the 10^th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC.

After the reform and opening-up, HAN Zaifen, a new-generation leader of Huangmei Opera, organically integrates the performance elements of such art categories as drama, film and TV play with tradition, thereby endowing this classical drama with greater splendour.

HAN Zaifen is Vice Chairman of the China Theatre Association, Chairman of the Anhui Theatre Association, Chairman of the Anqing Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Chairman of Anhui Zaifen Huangmei Opera Culture and Art Co., Ltd., President of the Anqing Zaifen Huangmei Opera Art Theatre, President of the Anhui Han Zaifen Huangmei Opera Art Foundation, a guest professor at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and a part-time Professor at the Tongji University and Shanghai Normal University. She has been elected a deputy to the National People’s Congress for four years successively.

HAN Zaifen is a national first-class actress and a representative inheritor of the Huangmei Opera, a national intangible cultural heritage. She has won the “Plum Blossom Prize”, “Wenhua Award for Performance”, “Magnolia Award for Drama” and the title of national “Artist with Virtues and Talents” twice. Also, she won the “First Prize for the Most Satisfactory Public Image as a Chinese Film & TV Celebrity in 2007” at the first Huading Award, the title of “Famous Chinese Drama Actress with the Best Public Image in 2008”, and the First Prize in the Online Selection of Most Influential Cultural Personages on the 60^th Anniversary of the founding of the PRC”. When having her heyday in the world of performing arts, HAN Zaifen is active on the stage of social welfare, serving as Image Ambassador of “Sincere China” and Image Ambassador of “Happy Childishness” Cultural Voluntary Services.

HAN Zaifen sprang into fame at 16 for starring in the Huangmei Opera TV series ZHENG Xiaojiao. Thus far she has starred in more than 30 greatly influential stage plays, including Emperor’s Female Son-in-law, Huizhou Women, The Company, Canna Indica and The Past of Huizhou, and more than 20 screen dramas including Long Song of Zhenguan and LI Qingzhao. By starring in the above works, she has not only expanded the performing tension of the Huangmei Opera art, but also attracted a wide young audience to the Huangmei Opera, raising the width and breadth of the artistic expression of the Huangmei Opera to a new level.

In 2005, HAN Zaifen was appointed as President of the Anqing Zaifen Huangmei Opera Art Theatre, China’s first theatre named after an artist after the beginning of the Reform and Opening-up. Committed to the inheritance and development of the Huangmei Opera and personnel training for the art, she has built a brand titled Zaifen Huangmei, and put forward an concept that “a brand should be created for cultural product”.

In 2010, HAN Zaifen’s performing art history and the form of the Huangmei Opera art represented by her were recorded and permanently collected by the Library of Congress as cultural classics from the rest of the world, making her the second Chinese opera artist to win this honour after Mr. MEI Lanfang.

In September 2012, the "Anhui Zaifen Huangmei Opera Culture and Art Co., Ltd.” was founded with HAN Zaifen as Chairman. The founding of this company represent a new exploration on the restructuring of other Chinese state-owned theatre troupes.

The history of Anqing Zaifen Huangmei Opera Theatre can be tracked back to the Huangmei Opera Troupe of Anqing Prefecture founded in the 1950s. Since establishment, this troupe has been leading the trend of Huangmei Opera. Artists of Huangmei Opera like WANG Luming, WANG Zhaoqian and MA Cailou have devoted all their efforts to the development of Huangmei Opera and the construction of the troupe and made splendid achievements, including Huangmei Opera Film Rosy Clouds, Huangmei Opera TV series ZHENG Xiaojiao and Huangmei Opera Huizhou Woman, which have been popular around the whole country, both in urban and rural areas.

At the end of 2005, the Anqing City established the Anqing Zaifen Huangmei Opera Theatre and appointed Ms. HAN Zaifen, the performing artist and vice chairperson of the China Theatre Association as the president of the theatre. Based in Anqing, the theatre often participated in major performance events, such as the joint performance at the "Olympic Theatre Season" in Beijing, the celebration of the 60^th Birthday of the People's Republic of China in Beijing, the "Tour around Jianghuai Region (the region between Yangtze River and Huaihe River) for Showing Respect to Teachers and Education", the Macau Art Festival, the Hubei Art Festival, the Chongqing Art Festival, the Chengdu International Cultural Heritage Festival and the performance for the Hong Kong International Conference of Anhui Merchants. During her 30 years of career, HAN Zaifen has won a number of awards and honours, including the "Magnolia Award", "Golden Eagle Award", "Plum Blossom Prize", "Splendor Award", "Golden Rooster Award", 'Model Artist Excellent in both Performing Skills and Moral Integrity' and “National Model Worker and Outstanding Worker'. She has also been elected the youngest vice chairperson of the China Theatre Association for her outstanding contributions. In 2010, Huangmei Art represented by her were recorded, collected and stored by the Library of Congress of the US as part of the world's cultural classics.

The Theatre has revived classic repertoire including The Female Duke (ancient), A Woman of Huizhou (end of the Qing Dynasty) and The Company (contemporary), rehearsed over 30 traditional playlets, and created new works like Cannaand Sons of Jianghuai. It has been titled "Outstanding Entity of Labor Competition" of Anhui Province and "National Outstanding Entity of the National Cultural System" of the Ministry of Culture. President HAN Zaifen is popular among and respected by the audience for consistent and positive performance of opera creation and performance, frequent participation in performance events and munificent works.

Also, Anqing Zaifen Huangmei Opera Theatre manages to keep up with modern trend and spread Huangmei opera through the internet, films, television and mobile phones. In December 2015, an Internet drama Backstage is Popular acted by Zaifen Huangmei's youth members soon got popular on the Internet, and was clicked for 80 million times on iQiyi.COM. On the evening of Feb. 2^nd, 2016, “Zaifen Huangmei 2016 New Year Opera Gala” was broadcast live via Internet for the first time which contributed to promote local culture and Huangmei opera. Anqing Zaifen Huangmei Opera Theatre also has received invitation for lots of influential variety shows including Idols are Coming, Day Day UP, Ding Ge Long Dong Qiang, as well as galas such as CCTV Spring Festival Gala, CCTV Spring Festival Opera Gala, and Hundred Flowers Spring—China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Gala. Meanwhile, through cooperating with iFlytek Co. Ltd, the theatre launched Huangmei opera ringback music. The theatre also introduced the traditional opera into Campus·Digital Version of Huangmei opera together with Times New Media Publishing Co. Ltd.
