In 100 BC, Su Wu serves as an envoy to the Xiongnu (Hun), but he is detained and becomes a shepherd in the Northern Sea…Su Wu of the Han Dynasty blends the songs for thousands of years in China and Lake Baikal shepherdess’ holy love, eulogizes Su Wu’s endurance of humiliation, loyalty and perseverance, and carries forward the Chinese people’s patriotism for millenniums.
The opera is based on a story when Yongle Canon (an ancient Chinese encyclopedia), was in compilation in Yongle Period of the Ming Dynasty. In the form of storytelling series, it describes the Ming court and social life.
As classical work created by Chinese drama master Cao Yu, Sunrise has been embraced by dozens of adaptations for decades. Year of 2015 marks the 80th Anniversary of publication and creation of this work. NCPA pays her tribute to Cao Yu and this drama in a novel form of opera.
The opera is enlightened by Sweet Osmanthus in August, a classic folk song spreading from Dabie Mountain Area to the whole China. It focuses on a woman's growth and choice for fate and Dabie Mountain natives’ pursuit for ideals and beliefs in the surging Agrarian Revolution.
NCPA opera commission Visitors on the Snow Mountain ends its domestic tour in Shanghai and Guangzhou. On April 15-16, it will sweep NCPA stage. The artists praise for ethnic brotherhood respectfully under the snow mountain and beside poplar trees.
