About

Synopsis

Matilda The Musical is more than just a story about a child.

It is a story about whether a tiny soul facing injustice can still find the courage to change the world.

Through Matilda's struggles against her family and school, the show crafts a powerful fable centered on imagination, knowledge, freedom, kindness, and the refusal to accept the world as it is.

“Even if you’re little, you can do a lot.”

This is the truth at the heart of Matilda The Musical — and one of the reasons it continues to resonate so deeply with audiences around the world.

Matilda The Musical is adapted from the beloved novel by celebrated British author Roald Dahl. Since its premiere by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 2010, it has become one of the world's most influential and groundbreaking original musicals.

With a book by acclaimed British playwright Dennis Kelly, music and lyrics by Australian musician-comedian Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus, the production uses highly inventive theatrical language, razor-sharp wit, imaginative visual storytelling, and exhilarating ensemble choreography to create a world about growing up, rebellion, and courage.

It has won over 100 international awards, including a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards — the most ever won by a musical at the time. The show has been performed in 91 cities worldwide and seen by over 12 million people. In 2022, the film adaptation Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical was released to widespread critical acclaim.

Iconic songs include Naughty, When I Grow Up, Quiet, and Revolting Children. The swing sequence in When I Grow Up, the alphabet-themed visual design of School Song, and the explosive ensemble number Revolting Children have all become defining moments in contemporary musical theatre.
