Welcome the New Year with the classic dance-drama Carmen brought to you by the Antonio Gades Company in the National Centre for the Performing Arts.
Choreographed by Spanish flamenco dancer Antonio Gades (1936-2004), it is based on French writer Prosper Merime's eponymous novel about a spirited gypsy girl, Carmen. She captivates numerous men with her enchanting beauty and ultimately falls victim to the fury of her lover.
The theater version of Carmen eschews her portrayal as a frivolous woman and instead shows her as one sincere in love and her quest for freedom.
Its debut in 1983 was an emphatic success with both critics and the public for presenting Carmen's story through the passion of flamenco.
The Antonio Gades Company has also staged Bodas de Sangre, Suite Flamenca and Fuenteovejuna, and remains true to Gade's dance style.
