The Fifth Space
Among the venues at the National Centre for the Performing Arts are a host of public spaces that are designed to amaze and stimulate. Jointly known as "The Fifth Space", they include the Underwater Corridor, the Olive Hall, an exhibition gallery, a resource centre, a press room, a terrace lounge, souvenir shops and cafes.
The Underwater Corridor
Stretching 80 meters beneath the outdoor lake, the Underwater Corridor provides an enchanting passage to the Centre's grand hall. The glass ceiling allows the light to shimmer through the lake water and create an otherworldly wonderland for visitors coming from the north entrance. If you are not already prepared for the artistic experience ahead, the Underwater Corridor will whisk you away to the land of imagination.
The Olive Hall
Named for its distinctive olive-like appearance, the Olive Hall is the gateway to the Centre and the Opera House. Flanking the entrance are two panels each bearing 180 relief oval shapes in a style derivative of the decorations found on ancient Chinese gates. The Olive Hall also offers a bird's-eye view of a unique performance space designed for smaller, experimental dramas.
Blossom Hall
The Foyer of the National Centre of the Performing Arts is all about its abundant space. Under the vast glass canopy, visitors can move freely among the cafes and stores. The roof terraces of the three main venues also offer extra room: the Blossom Hall atop the Opera House; the resource centre above the Concert Hall; and the the press room on top of the Theatre.

Glass Curtain Walls
Standing beneath the unfolding glass screen at the north side of the Centre, you too can feel like you are on stage and about to perform to the world. The outdoor lake and the square stretch before you like a grand auditorium. Lined with tens of thousands of panels of jequitiba, also known as Brazilian rosewood, the dome of the foyer is the largest of its type in China.

Building symbols

The distinctively original semiotics of the National Centre for the Performing Arts are the synthesis of its time, location and function. The ever-expanding space for artistic creativity can be seen in the pithy, streamlined and complementary arcs of the structures throughout the Fifth Space, while the prevailing colour scheme of red and gold and recurring orchid motifs lend themselves to Chinese architectural tradition.

A Land of Enchanting Beauty
Even the floor of the foyer is rich in symbolism. Covered in stone from ten different regions in China, it has been named "Land of Enchanting Beauty", which, in Chinese, expresses the hope for an ever-flourishing China throughout its vast territories.
