The Concept of Art Education

The National Centre for the Performing Arts is committed to showcasing the best of Chinese and international culture but our work doesn't stop there. Through our innovative educational programs, we aim to make the performing arts more accessible to people all over China and the world. Our long-term goal is: to serve the people, to create a platform for international arts education and to become the forerunner in arts education within China.
We have established strong links with various arts institutions throughout China and beyond, enabling us to invite leading experts and professors to deliver lectures to our visitors. By combining professional knowledge with the stunning performances, we hope to offer the public a more complete theatre experience. We believe this interactive approach can bring artists - from both the professional and amateur ranks - and the public closer together, providing our rising stars the opportunity to display their talents early on in their careers.
The primary language of our lecture series is Mandarin Chinese, and no translation service will be provided at the moment. Please feel free to bring a friend who can help you understand what's being said.

Art Lectures

Renowned artistic experts and celebrities from around the globe are regularly invited to the NCPA to share their thoughts and experiences with members of the public. Sweeping pretension under the carpet, the lectures will discuss a range of issues connected with art and culture in an engaging and colourful style. We want to help you explore the thinking behind the artistic genres presented on stage at the Centre's venues in a relaxed and informal environment.

Educational Performances

As part of our commitment to promote classical music among the youth, we are hosting a series of concerts that will be accompanied by commentary and analysis from our special guest conductors.
During the First International Performance Season, Chinese American maestro Hu Yongyan, the director of the EOS Orchestra Academy, with the Central Conservatory of Music, will be taking centre stage. After each piece, Maestro Hu will attempt to unravel the intricacies of symphony orchestra in order to inspire a sense of musical appreciation in his audience and make classical music more accessible, particularly to the younger generations.
We are also striving to preserve the richness of traditional Chinese culture among the younger members of our audience through our Weekend Chinese Opera Shows. Famous opera performers, past and present, will be on hand to reenact and talk you through various opera highlights so you can develop a clearer understanding of Peking Opera's infinite charm for future performances.

Talking to the Master

Bridging the gap between the artistic elite and their audiences, our inventive question-and-answer series "Talk to the Masters" allows our visitors to quiz our special invited guests, on any aspect of art, music and culture. Whether it is discussing the differences between Chinese and Western culture, offering fresh insight into famous musical masterpieces or simply debunking myths, our experts will interact with members of the public on the topic of the audience's choice.

Open Rehearsals

Our "Open Rehearsals" initiative provides our visitors with a unique glimpse of just how much effort goes into taking a performance from the page to the stage. We offer you the chance to witness a masterpiece in the making; to experience, firsthand, the commitment of the cast, the ambition of the director and all the work that goes unnoticed behind the scenes. As the Chinese saying goes: "a minute on stage requires ten years of hard work off stage."
