Programme Introduction

A Dance on the Secret Language of Women, Women Fantasies and more...

Nüshu, literally "female writing", is one of the most interesting and least known writing system in the world. While traditional Chinese culture is male-centred and forbids girls from any kind of formal education, peasant women in Jiangyong county of Hunan province invented and developed this written language over hundred of years. Inspired by the alluringly embroidered Nüshu missives, as well as the shimmering prose of two contemporary Hong Kong female writers, Xi Xi and Wong Bik-wan, Helen Lai, renowned choreographer of Hong Kong, tells HerStory in another, altogether different, vocabulary. Three languages are at play here: ancient Nüshu, modern womanhood, both infused and interpreted by Lai in an excursion between the secret and overt, between text and non-text, all through the perceptive artistry of CCDC dancers.

Premiered in Hong Kong in 2007 with critical acclaims, HerStory has swept two awards of this year's Hong Kong Dance Awards and is proved to be Lai's magnum opus on the subject of women.
