A rallying cry of a nation and soul-stirring stories about a great country,
A 170 year-long journey towards China's revitalization,
An epic the whole nation shall cherish.

Music and dance epic Road to Revive, representing painstaking efforts of multiple famous artists, was staged in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. As the third work in this genre after The East is Red and Song of Chinese Revolutionists, it's a soulful paean to the motherland; and the powerful sound from the profound accumulation of the Chinese people.

After its successful premiere in the Great Hall of the People, Road to Revive will be staged in the NCPA, and rendered even more subtle. The 80 performance sessions will create in the audience a great emotional resonance.

About the Epic
A National Epic Spanning "169 + 1" Years
The music and dance epic Road to Revive, unfolds in chronological order based on significant historical events. It consists of five sections, namely Our Mountains and Rivers, Warm Blood, Pioneering Work, Grand Tides, and Ode to China and depicts a great road to rejuvenation of China starting from the 1840 Opium War. Based on the performances in the Great Hall of the People in 2009, the second round in NCPA will span 170 years, which will enable the audience to read history, and appeal to their emotional feelings.

Telling the History through the Most Characteristic "Expressions"
In Road to Revive, "typical moments" in the 170-year journey of the Chinese nation are framed and enlarged artistically. As chief director Zhang Jigang put it, it's using "typical expressions of each critical moment in history" to reflect the tremendous change of times. Numerous moments (i.e., when the sound of artillery brought an end to the luxurious life of the last dynasty, when the Communist Party of China announced its founding, accompanied by the music of The Internationale, when the name of new China was being passed on among soldiers, and when all professions and trades threw themselves into the construction surge for socialism…) merge into a journey towards the nation's rejuvenation. The presentation of milestone events in modern history as well as delicate depiction of characters, the poignant memories of the past as well as great vision for the future render this music and dance epic a majestic grandeur and a heart-warming quality.

Road to Revive Presents a More Compelling Portrait

With epic as its bones and music and dance as its fleshes, Road to Revive creates strong and fascinating stage effects. Various art forms, like music, dance, singing, chorus, drama, reciting, etc., integrate harmoniously; magnificent stage and advanced multi-media equipments create appealing audio and visual effect; modern aesthetics and national culture blend well; the history interacts with the reality; the square arts are perfectly combined with theatre arts.

The NCPA itself will give many inspirations to the cast and crew, particularly in terms of drama direction and stage presentation. The 47.5-meter stage of its Opera House will be fully put to use and all possible functions of a stage will be exploited, so as to create more poetic space and more fantastic stage effect.

In addition, the epic will be refined with the original two-and-a-half-hour show shortened to less than two hours. In this way, its conciseness and exquisiteness will be ensured. All the distinguished artists in the premiere will also rerun on the NCPA stage.

As the NCPA's most important opening show of 2010, Road to Revive will set many records in the NCPA: it is the longest running performance with the most sessions given; it involves the most diversified and complex stage arrangements and has the largest star-studded cast. It is a great drama that you would never want to miss.

"As an epic-like grandeur, Road to Revive builds up our nation's image."

"Road to Revive incorporates majesty and delicacy simultaneously."
Fan Yongge, Former Editor-in-chief of Art and Literature Journal
