History

Back in 1958, when Chairman Mao and the Central Party decided to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with the construction of a range of majestic public buildings, one of them was the National Centre for the Performing Arts. It was Premier Zhou Enlai who finalized the site of the Centre.
The collective leadership of the third generation with comrade Jiang Zeming as the core paid much attention to the NCPA project. The Resolution on Some Important Issues Concerning the Further Construction of Socialist Spiritual Civilization approved at the Sixth Plenary Session of the Fourteenth CPC Central Committee pointed out that some key projects of cultural significance should be built in a planned way.
In January 1998, the Leading Group for NCPA’s Construction was established and headed by Jia Qinglin, then Member of the Politbureau of CPC Central Committee and Secretary of CPC Beijing Municipal Committee. The NCPA’s Proprietary Committee was set up at the same time, which comprised of members from Beijing municipal government, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Construction.
In July, 2007, the construction of NCPA was finally completed, thanks to the leadership of the current NCPA’s Leading Group headed by Liu Qi, Member of the Politbureau of CPC Central Committee and Secretary of CPC Beijing Municipal Committee.
